Mr. Filippos Chelmis

Background and Education

Filippos Chelmis was born in Athens, Greece, in 2001. After completing his secondary education, he moved to Sofia, Bulgaria, where he is currently a 6th-year medical student at Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski." His academic journey has been marked by a deep commitment to both clinical practice and research.

Research and Academic Contributions

From the outset of his medical education, Filippos has been actively involved in research. He began his scientific career at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, where he worked at the Institute of Neurobiology. Under the mentorship of an esteemed researcher, he developed expertise in experimental research using animal models, with a focus on neuroscience. His contributions in this field laid a strong foundation for his ongoing academic and clinical pursuits.

Neurosurgery and Clinical Experience

Driven by his passion for neurosurgery, Filippos spent two years at the Neurosurgery Department of Sofiamed Hospital. During this time, he assisted in surgeries and contributed to the clinical work of the department. He also leveraged his research skills to support the publication efforts of the department, reflecting his deep commitment to advancing the field of neurosurgery.

Filippos further enhanced his neurosurgical experience with internships at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, UK. There, he had the privilege of working with leading neurosurgeons and mentors, fueling his enthusiasm for research and clinical innovation. Notably, he contributed to audits and was instrumental in developing surgical guidelines for idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) for the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies (EANS).

Medical Simulation Educator

In addition to his clinical and research work, Filippos is a dedicated medical simulation educator. He teaches medical students, residents, and practicing doctors how to utilize simulation in medical training. Simulation is a powerful tool in modern medicine, offering a risk-free environment to practice procedures, improve decision-making skills, and enhance patient safety. Through his teaching, Filippos plays a key role in advancing medical education and improving clinical outcomes.

Collaboration and Openness to New Projects

Filippos is known for his collaborative spirit and is always eager to assist his colleagues with their projects. He is open to exploring new research initiatives and is enthusiastic about working on innovative ideas that can advance the medical field.

Career Goals

Filippos' long-term goal is to secure a residency position in neurosurgery in the United States, where he aims to further his clinical skills and contribute to advancements in the field.

International Congress Participation

Filippos has been an active participant in several prestigious international medical congresses, showcasing his work and learning from global experts. He has attended congresses organized by the American College of Surgeons (ACS), the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies (EANS), the Society of British Neurological Surgeons (SBNS), and the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), among others.
